Tandis que la levée de fonds pour le film « The German King » arrive bientôt à son terme, l’actrice Constance Ejuma, qui y interprètera un des personnages principaux a livré un entretien exclusif à LFC. [La version anglaise à la suite – English version following]

C’est un des rares projets qui met en avant l’histoire du Cameroun. «  The German King », le film en préparation de Adetokumboh McCormack a déjà levée 13 750 $ USA sur les 20 000 $ attendus. Constance Ejuma ( Black Panther 2018 ),  qui jouera la femme de Rudolf Douala Manga Bell s’exprime sur le projet.

LFC: Vous allez jouer le rôle d’Emily dans le prochain projet de film intitulé «The German King » aux côtés de l’acteur sierra-léonais Adetokumboh Frederick Mc Cormack. Mais qui était Rudolf Duala Manga Bell ?

Constance Ejuma: Rudolf Duala Manga Bell était un roi de Douala à l’époque du colonialisme allemand. Bien qu’ayant fait ses études en Allemagne, il a mené une résistance contre les Allemands lorsqu’ils ont tenté de lancer un projet d’urbanisation qui aurait essentiellement créé un système d’apartheid au Cameroun. Il a finalement été exécuté par les puissances coloniales et a depuis été reconnu comme l’un des tout premiers héros anti-coloniaux du Cameroun.

LFC: Pourquoi précisément le biopic de Rudolf Douala Manga Bell ?

Constance Ejuma: Pourquoi pas Rudolf Duala Manga Bell ? L’histoire africaine est riche en personnages qui ont transformés leurs nations mais dont les récits ont été oubliés ou effacés. Le roi Rudolf n’est que l’un de ces personnages. Le scénariste / réalisateur Adetokumboh McCormack a découvert cette histoire et a estimé que l’héroïsme du roi Rudolf devait être célébré.

LFC : Pensez-vous que « The German King » pourrait un jour devenir le «Lumumba» du Cameroun avec quelques décennies de différence ? 

Constance Ejuma : Oui. Il y a certainement des parallèles dans leur défiance contre l’oppression coloniale.

LFC: Est-ce que l’angle du film sera aussi politique que celui de Lumumba ou s’agira-t-il d’un film plus intimiste du personnage historique ?

Constance Ejuma : Un peu des deux. Le titre du film laisse deviner ses nuances politiques. En raison de son éducation allemande, Bell était sensé perpétuer l’agenda colonial. Mais lorsqu’il a reconnu le caractère oppressif du pouvoir colonial, il s’est rangé du côté de son peuple et a pris des mesures pour tenter de le protéger – non seulement en tendant la main à d’autres chefs camerounais, mais également aux dirigeants d’autres pays.

LFC: Qui était Emily et pourquoi avez-vous choisi de jouer ce rôle ?

Constance Ejuma : Emily Engome Dayas était la femme du roi Rudolf. J’ai choisi de jouer ce rôle parce que je veux apporter ma contribution pour mettre en lumière cette importante partie de notre histoire. En tant que Camerounaise, j’ai toujours eu pour objectif de faire découvrir notre histoire au reste du monde et c’est une occasion rêvée de le faire.

LFC: Au fait, avez-vous choisi ce rôle ou vous a-t-il été offert ?

Constance Ejuma : Il m’a été offert.

LFC: Vous avez lancé une collecte de fonds pour ce film. Mais pouvez-vous nous en dire plus sur l’équipe du projet ? Réalisateur, Scénariste, Lieux de tournage etc.?

Constance Ejuma : Le projet est dirigé par le scénariste / réalisateur / acteur Adetokumboh McCormack, qui jouera également le rôle principal. Le casting comprend un nombre d’acteurs incroyablement talentueux – parmi eux le camerounais, Jude Yong, qui jouera le rôle du roi Njoya. Comme il s’agit d’un court métrage, nous allons le tourner aux États-Unis, mais nous espérons pouvoir tourner un long métrage un jour au Cameroun.

LFC: De combien avez-vous besoin et pourquoi ?

Constance Ejuma: Nous souhaitons collecter 20 000 dollars pour couvrir les coûts de production. Les gens peuvent contribuer à notre campagne de financement participatif ici.

LFC: Avez-vous déjà défini un calendrier pour le début et la fin du tournage, la bande-annonce, la sortie éventuelle?

INTERVIEW : CONSTANCE EJUMA , «  King Rudolf’s heroism needed to be celebrated »

While the fundraiser for the movie « The German King » is coming to an end, actress Constance Ejuma, who will perform one of the main characters, delivered an exclusive interview to LFC. [English version]

It is one of the rare projects that highlights the history of Cameroon. «  The German King », the film in preparation of Adetokumboh McCormack has already raised $ 13,750 USA on the $ 20,000 expected. Constance Ejuma ( Black Panther 2018) who will play the wife of Rudolf Douala Manga Bell speaks about the project.

LFC : You will play the role of Emily in the next movie project called « The german king » alongside Sierra Leonean actor Adetokumboh Frederick Mc Cormack. But who was Rudolf Douala Manga Bell ?

Constance Ejuma : Rudolf Duala Manga Bell was a Douala King at the time of German colonialism. Though he was educated in Germany, he launched a resistance against the Germans when they attempted to initiate an urbanization project which would have essentially created an apartheid system in the Cameroon. He was eventually executed by the colonial powers and has since been remembered as one of Cameroon’s earliest anti-colonial heroes.

LFC : Why precisely Rudolf Douala Manga Bell’s Biopic ?

Constance Ejuma : Why not Rudolf Duala Manga Bell? African history is rich with figures who transformed their nations but whose stories have either been forgotten or erased. King Rudolf is just one among many such figures. When writer/director Adetokumboh McCormack discovered this story, he felt that King Rudolf’s heroism needed to be celebrated.

LFC : Do you think that « The German King » could one day become the « Lumumba » of Cameroon to a few decades of difference? ( laugh)

Constance Ejuma : I do. There are certainly parallels in their defiance against colonial oppression.

LFC : Will the film’s angle be as political as Lumumba’s, or will it be a more intimate movie of the historical character?

Constance Ejuma : A bit of both. The title of film gives away it’s political undertones. Because of his German education, Bell was expected to push forward the colonial agenda. But when he recognized the oppressive nature of colonial rule, he sided with his people and took steps to try and protect them – not only reaching out to other Cameroonian chiefs but to leaders of other countries as well.

LFC : Who was Emily and why have you chosen to play this role ? 

Constance Ejuma : Emily Engome Dayas was King Rudolf’s wife. I chose to play the role because I want to do my part in bringing this important story to life. As a Cameroonian, it’s always been my goal to share our stories with the world and this is a dream opportunity to accomplish just that.

LFC : By the way, did you choose this role or was it offered to you?

Constance Ejuma : It was offered to me.

LFC : You have launched a fundraiser for this film. But can you tell us more about the project team? Director, Writer, Filming locations etc?

Constance Ejuma : The project is being helmed by writer/director/actor Adetokumboh McCormack who will also play the lead role. The cast includes a number of incredibly talented actors – among them fellow Cameroonian, Jude Yong, who will play the role of King Njoya. As this is a short film, we are going to shoot it in the USA but we are hopeful that someday we will shoot a feature on location in Cameroon.

LFC : How much do you need, and for what ?

Constance Ejuma : We would like to raise $20,000 to cover the cost of production. People can contribute to our crowdfunding campaign here.

LFC : Have you already set a schedule for the start and end of filming, the trailer, the eventual release?
